WORD LIST: Weights and Measures

In Specialized English we use metric units to express amounts of things.

The common units are:

Length (or distance)

1 kilometer = 1000 meters
1 meter = 100 centimeters
1 meter = 1000 millimeters

Volume (amounts of liquids)

1 cubic meter = 1000 liters
1 liter = 1000 cubic centimeters (often called "cc")

Weight (or mass)

1 tonne (or 'metric ton') = 1000 kilograms
1 kilogram = 1000 grams
1 gram = 1000 milligrams

Time

1 year = 12 months, or 365 days
1 week = 7 days
1 day = 24 hours
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
